The surveillance layer for 14 million vaccinated cattle

BovRes BR-1 is a South African-made, self-powered, off-grid cattle collar and platform that detects the onset of fever and behaviour change one to three days before an animal looks sick, and turns vaccinated herds into a surveillance network that farmers, processors and the state can act on.

The problem

Vaccination works. It creates the next problem.

South Africa's 2025–26 FMD outbreak is the worst on record. A national disaster was declared in February 2026; beef exports fell 36%; dairy losses passed R1 billion at about R5,000 per affected cow; BFAP projects R3.2–11.3 billion of beef-sector losses to 2030.

Government is vaccinating 14 million cattle by December 2026 and new outbreaks in Gauteng are down 96%. But under WOAH rules, export status returns only when continuous clinical and serological surveillance proves the virus is no longer circulating in vaccinated herds. Vaccinated animals can still be infected and shed virus, with milder and later signs. The state veterinary service cannot physically inspect 14 million animals for the next 12–24 months.

Surveillance, not vaccination, is now the bottleneck to R1.8 billion or more of export earnings a year.

Why the incumbents don't solve it

  • Imported ear-tag and bolus systems sell per-cow productivity to connected dairies at R4,000–8,000 landed plus subscription
  • They need base stations or cellular coverage, which extensive South African farms do not have
  • None offers herd- or district-level outbreak analytics, state-facing surveillance evidence or LITS-SA alignment
The science

Infectious days before anyone can see it

0 hExposure
24 hVirus shed in nasal secretions (some animals)
72 hViraemia; transmission to in-contact cattle
~96 hFirst fever >40 °C or first vesicle
5–7 dVisible lesions, lameness: farmer notices

Evidence. Challenge studies: cattle transmit FMD at least 24 h before clinical signs; fever is the earliest sign (Arzt et al., Sci Rep 2025; Front Vet Sci 2025; Vet Res 2025). Sensor studies: rumen-temperature boluses detect fever 12–136 h before clinical respiratory disease; behaviour sensors detect change 5–7 days before (Vet J 2011; Animals 2024). Continuous temperature and behaviour monitoring is an established, commercially proven method; BR-1 applies it to the outbreak-surveillance problem at a South African price point.

BR-1 does not treat, prevent or cure any disease and no such claim is made. It is regulated as electronics (ICASA/SABS), not as a veterinary medicine. All performance claims will come from independent, pre-registered studies.

The product

One network, three customers

HerdLink Farm

For the farmer. Traffic-light dashboard; same-day alerts for fever, activity collapse, rumination drop, lameness, mastitis and heat; find-the-animal locator; LITS-SA movement log. R25 / animal / month.

HerdLink Surveillance

For state vets and DALRRD. District anomaly clustering and contact tracing; continuous "no clinical signs" evidence per farm for WOAH-compliant surveillance and export re-certification. Licensed per district.

HerdLink Assurance

For processors, exporters, insurers. Verification that supplying herds were continuously monitored with no unresolved alerts for the required period. Licensed per buyer.

BR-1 collar

  • Contact IR temperature with ambient compensation; optional tympanic ear-tag sensor
  • 3-axis accelerometer: activity, lying, rumination proxy, lameness signature
  • Solar + kinetic power, 5-year life, IP68 ASA/TPU housing
  • LoRaWAN collar-to-collar mesh to a solar gateway; no cell coverage or SIMs
  • Mesh trilateration; optional GPS; geofences
  • Per-animal baseline on the collar; compact anomaly uplink every 15 min
  • Locally moulded and assembled; R2,499 retail; unit cost R1,250 at 100 units falling to R650 at 45,000
